UP CAMP and UPCM Celebrate 25 Years of the Master in Clinical Audiology Program
The University of the Philippines College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP) and the College of Medicine (UPCM) celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Master in Clinical Audiology (MClinAud) program, a pioneering effort between the two colleges. The event took place on September 7 at the Unilab Multipurpose Hall, 6th Floor of the Henry Sy Building, UP Manila.
The anniversary was marked by insightful lectures and discussions, covering key updates in audiology, the National Cochlear Implant Program, and the role of audiology in shaping the future of hearing health in the Philippines. Highlights of the event included a look back at the program’s journey and its significant contributions to hearing healthcare nationwide.
Among speakers from CAMP, Dr. Joyce Marzan reflected on how the MClinAud program has equipped its graduates to become critical thinkers and compassionate, client-centered practitioners. Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Jaymi Ombao emphasized the far-reaching impact of the program, noting its graduates’ contributions to landmark legislation, such as in the implementation of Republic Act 9709—An Act Establishing a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program—and various service learning initiatives like the Family Education Program. Several graduates have also taken active and leadership roles in the Association of Clinical Audiologists in the Philippines. Despite the relatively small number of graduates, the program’s influence has been felt nationwide.
The celebration also recognized the key figures behind the creation and pilot implementation of the MClinAud program, whose vision and dedication laid the foundation for its success: Prof. Philip Newall, Dr. Douglas Clutton, Dr. Generoso Abes, Dr. Joselito Jamir, Dr. Abner Chan, Dr. Teresa Luisa Gloria Cruz, Dr. Jocelyn Christina Marzan, Dr. Ramon Arcadio (former UP Manila Chancellor and UPCM Dean), Prof. Susan Villegas (former CAMP Dean), and UPCM Dean Dr. Charlotte Chiong.
In her closing remarks, CAMP Dean Mia Rotor reaffirmed CAMP’s commitment to further elevate the program in collaboration with UPCM, ensuring that its roots continue to grow deep and its wings spread wider. She emphasized the importance of fostering a new generation of hearing health specialists who will carry on the legacy of excellence in audiology.
