UP CAMP Brings Community-Based Rehabilitation and Teletherapy Initiative to Batanes
BASCO, BATANES — The University of the Philippines Manila – College of Allied Medical Professions (UP CAMP) successfully concluded Lakbay Agapay 2026, a community-based rehabilitation (CBR) mission that expanded access to rehabilitation services for children, older adults, caregivers, and communities in Basco, Batanes. This initiative marks the seventh consecutive year of partnership between UP CAMP and the Local Government of Basco, highlighting a sustained collaboration to strengthen community-based rehabilitation services for Ivatan communities. Over the years, the partnership has expanded local capacity, promoted inclusive healthcare, and improved access to rehabilitation services across the municipality.
This year’s mission was led by Asst. Prof. Kristel Faye Roderos, OTRP, UP CAMP Community-Based Rehabilitation Program Head, together with Asst. Prof. Penafrancia Ching, OTRP; Asst. Prof. Guia Allyza Rabacca, OTRP; Asst. Prof. Lloeden Lois Cabacuñgan, RSLP; Asst. Prof. John Patrick Lentejas, PTRP; Dr. Ferdiliza Dandah Garcia; and Ms. Samantha Mari Agura, OTRP. Working alongside local government officials, educators, healthcare workers, and community volunteers, the multidisciplinary team delivered rehabilitation, wellness, and capacity-building activities that continue to empower families and strengthen rehabilitation systems in Batanes.
A key component of the mission was preparing families for teletherapy. Twelve parents and caregivers from four barangays attended orientation sessions on occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech pathology services, while learning practical strategies to support their children’s development at home. Eight participants expressed confidence in participating in teletherapy after the sessions, while six pilot families also received home visits to assess their readiness and provide individualized parent coaching. The team further proposed communal teletherapy hubs to improve access for families with limited resources.
Lakbay Agapay also invested in developing future rehabilitation professionals by conducting career talks for Grade 10 to 12 students from Basco Central School and Sabtang, introducing opportunities in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech pathology while providing guidance on preparing for allied health education.
