UP CAMP Hosts Faculty and Students from Japan’s IUHW and FIUHW

From September 2 to 11, 2024, the UP College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP) warmly welcomed two faculty members and 22 students from Japan’s International University of Health and Welfare and Fukuoka International University of Health and Welfare. The visiting students, hailing from various allied health fields, took part in a 10-day study and cultural tour aimed at fostering international collaboration and exchange in health education.

Despite challenges posed by typhoon-related class cancellations, the delegation remained undeterred, as CAMP swiftly adjusted and modified activities. The group continued to enjoy a dynamic mix of learning sessions and cultural exploration, making their stay both enriching and enjoyable.

The international delegates had a courtesy call with UP Manila Chancellor Michael Tee and other university officials on Tuesday, September 10. The meeting underscored the importance of international partnerships, with discussions on future collaborations in student exchange.

Other activities included discussions on the Philippine healthcare system and the roles of various health professions in the country, with special lecturers from CAMP, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Public Health. The Japanese students also visited several departments and offices within UP Manila, such as the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, the UP-PGH ACCESS Hub for Children with Disabilities, and the CAMP Clinic for Therapy Services. They also took time to tour Old Manila, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the city.

Another highlight was the visit to ALRES Philippines and the UP College of Human Kinetics Sports Clinic, where both universities explored education and rehabilitation services in the private sector and through specialized sports services.

A special Tomodachi (friends/friendship) Hour brought CAMP and Japanese students together for a lively cultural exchange, where they showcased local sports and activities. The CAMP Association of Physical Therapy Students also organized a mini-sports fest in celebration of World and National PT Day, adding an exciting element to the exchange and strengthening camaraderie.

The successful visit underscored the importance of cultural exchange in shaping global perspectives, with both institutions embracing their roles as global citizens. Through shared experiences and cross-cultural learning, the students gained a deeper understanding of the diverse healthcare landscapes in Japan and the Philippines.
