UP CAMP Brings Rehabilitation Screening Services to Children with Special Needs in Taytay

In celebration of the National Disability Rights Week, volunteer faculty, alumni, administrative staff, and friends of UP CAMP conducted a screening activity for children with special needs at Rosario Ocampo Elementary School (ROES) in Taytay, Rizal on July 22, 2026. The event was organized under the CAMP Public Service and Extension Committee, led by Assoc. Prof. Fernando Alejandro Ligot, as part of its partnership with the Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration and Empowerment of the Visually Impaired (ATRIEV).

A total of 44 students from the Special Needs Department were screened by professionals from the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology. In addition, 11 children with hearing impairments were assessed by audiologist, Asst. Prof. Jamilyn Ombao. The screening focused on identifying each child’s mobility, functionality, communication, and hearing concerns. Parents were also given home program recommendations they can practice with their children.
Special needs teachers from the school assisted the volunteers throughout the activity. Representatives from the Taytay local government also visited and provided refreshments for the team, parents, and students. Toward the end of the program, discussions were held with ROES representatives, Miss Teresita Andres and Mr. Johan Santos, and members of the Public Service and Extension Committee to explore future projects and sustain ongoing support for the students and their families.

As the country observes National Disability Rights Week, initiatives such as this reinforce the importance of advancing the rights, inclusion, and well-being of persons with disabilities through accessible rehabilitation services and meaningful community partnerships. UP CAMP remains committed to working alongside communities and stakeholders to help create more inclusive environments where every individual has the opportunity to participate fully and thrive.
